Advocates in Action: Who We Are

Advocates in Action is Rhode Island's Statewide Self-Advocacy organization. Our Board of Directors is composed of individuals who have developmental disabilities. Board members represent groups of people who also have developmental disabilities from all over RI.

Together we work to help people understand information more clearly, learn about rights, participate in their communities and share their unique gifts with the rest of society. We also work to raise public awareness about disabilities.

Some of our activities include:

  • Hosting an annual statewide Self-Advocacy
    conference. Approximately 430 people attend.

  • Hosting an annual Statewide Self-Advocacy Town Hall style meeting. Approximately 300 people attend.

  • Designing/Adapting accessible materials in a variety of formats to help people understand issues related to Self-Advocacy.

  • Coordinating a year-long Leadership Series training for individuals who have a Developmental Disability, families and direct support staff.

  • Supporting local Self-Advocacy groups.

  • Helping individuals to capture their stories and share them with others. There is a lot of POWER in a personal story!

  • Bringing disability awareness experiences to schools, colleges, businesses, support agencies and others.

  • Providing training and resource materials for others in print, multi-media and through our website.

  • Hosting several fun events a year. In addition to having a good time together, these events also provide people the opportunity to connect and network. The events include

    • The No Talent Show (@ 240 attendees)
    • The Beach Bash (@ 200 attendees – space limits this number)
    • The Statewide Self-Advocacy Group Holiday Party (@ 225 attendees)
